This book is an autobiography written by Marcel Reich Ranicki who is a very important contemporary literary critic of German literature In Hebrew the book was translated as if put back to English Life and Literature though the original title in German reads Mein Leben or again put in English My Life The same book was translated to English as The Author of Himself The Life of Marcel Reich Ranicki Mostly I dislike when translators take this kind of interpretive liberty especially in such obvious cases however after reading this book I must confess that the Hebrew translation does do it justice In fact even better would have been to translate it into Life As LiteratureThe author had very interesting life so far being born in Poland in 1920 moving to Germany at the age of 9 studying there expelled into Poland by the Nazi Germans in 1938 and then surviving the Warsaw Ghetto together with his lifetime partner and wife who he had married there Later on he toiled most diligently to become the literary critic that he is meeting and in some cases befriending some of the greatest German authors of the 20th century such as Mann Hesse Frisch B ll and many others most of them I never even heard of The book is only 400 something pages and is very flowingOne thing I am convinced of is that had the author wished so he could easily have spanned a much longer tale Finishing it one gets the impression of only briefly touching the tip of the fork representing Reich s life and only the parts he wishes to exposeThis brings me to my translation s assertion above The author almost loses his wife he watches both his parents hopelessly as they are taken to Treblinka he mentions here and there that his wife suffered later in life from several nervous breakdowns but through all this you mainly get a very dry descriptive account of these events and the main feelings that are expressed are primarily in relation to the literary world and literature Initially I thought perhaps this kind of exposure is just too painful for the author to discuss at length Then I entertained the thought that maybe the author really is emotionally obtuse or detached either as a defense mechanism or was always this wayMy last conclusion however is that Reich is so obsessed and was like that throughout his life whether as a form of escapism or through deep love obsession relationship with literature and literary criticism that he actually looks on his own life as a kind of a literary creation and when writing about it he writes about it as the literary critic that he is It is an interesting and open uestion whether this supra intellectual attitude to life was always prevalent whilst living them or is it only the impression conveyed via the autobiographical textIn all events for anyone interested in Jewish survival and life in Germany and Poland during the Nazi period or in literature or in intellectualism or all of the above this book will prove to be a fascinating read Marriage by Deception you mainly get a very dry descriptive account of these events and the main feelings that are expressed are primarily in relation to the literary world and literature Initially I thought perhaps this kind of exposure is just too painful for the author to discuss at length Then I entertained the thought that maybe the author really is emotionally obtuse or detached either as a defense mechanism or was always this wayMy last conclusion however is that Reich is so obsessed and was like that throughout his life whether as a form of escapism or through deep love obsession relationship with literature and literary criticism that he actually looks on his own life as a kind of a literary creation and when writing about it he writes about it as the literary critic that he is It is an interesting and open uestion whether this supra intellectual attitude to life was always prevalent whilst living them or is it only the impression conveyed via the autobiographical textIn all events for anyone interested in Jewish survival and life in Germany and Poland during the Nazi period or in literature or in intellectualism or all of the above this book will prove to be a fascinating read

The audiobook I had only contained two parts out of five about his school years and the war Despite the horrible times he had to live through Marcel Reich Ranicki manages to describe these times with a good amount of wit and an emphasis on beauty how he fell in love with his wife or how the was a symphonic orchestra in the Warsaw ghetto

Interesting autobiography now available in English as The Author of HimselfBorn in Poland and educated in Germany in the Prussian education system he reflects on that experience as representing two poles of German life On the one hand its cultural heritage on the other the cane hanging on the wall to enforce classroom disciplineDeported to Poland in 1938 there Reich Ranicki survived the Warsaw Ghetto and the remainder of the war Expelled from the Polish Workers Party in 1949 and finding the anti semitism in the country difficult to cope with he and his family emigrated to West Germany in 1958 where he eventually emerged as the foremost literary critic in GermanyBecause of his involvement in the foundation of the group 47 literary movement and close association with authors like G nter Grass his autobiography also deals with the development of the post war literary scene in Germany his opinions on which are all expressed trenchantly I think I could well reread this to see if I can get a sense of the development of his literary opinions
